Tibetan Buddhist Culture-The Meaning of the Six-Character Mantra

In many Tibetan cultural artifacts, the Six-Word Mantra is a common sight. The Six-Word Mantra is rich in meaning and infinitely profound, embodying the great wisdom and compassion of the universe.

The Six-Word Mantra consists of six syllables: “Om, Ma, Ni, Pad, Me, Hum.”

Om: Represents the destruction of ignorance.

Ma: Represents the elimination of anger and hatred.

Ni: Represents the eradication of pride and arrogance.

Pad: Represents the removal of greed and desire.

Me: Represents the dispelling of jealousy.

Hum: Represents the liberation from all afflictions and troubles.

Om: Embark on the path of spiritual practice. Om (ōng) is the opening line of spiritual practice. “Om” is an important beginning of spiritual practice. It comes from the depth of the chest, and the sound is deep and thick, which drives the whole body to resonate. It represents our integration with the Buddha’s body, speech and mind. Chanting “Om” sincerely seems to add a different perspective to the mind, allowing us to look at the world with a new perspective and steadily start the journey of investigating the Buddhist Dharma.

Ma: Ma (mā) conveys the meaning of kindness – the warm sunshine of spring

“Ma” is like the warm sunshine of spring, which gently conveys kindness to our hearts. In life, there will always be times when we are angry and annoyed. However, once we recite “Ma”, the inner irritability will gradually dissipate. It makes us understand how to tolerate with love and know that the inner love is the power.

Ni:”Ni” is the key factor to inspire wisdom. When faced with complex choices and feeling confused, chanting “Ni” can gradually calm your restless heart.Inner wisdom is awakened, helping us analyze problems, make reasonable judgments, stay awake at all times, and not be confused by superficial phenomena.

Pad:”Pad” is like a rain that cleanses the body and mind. It can remove our past bad behavior and the greed, jealousy, etc. in our hearts.Chanting “Pad” regularly is like cleaning your mind regularly, keeping your heart clean and making it easier to accept the wisdom of Buddhism.

Me:”Me” is like an attractive existence that can bring the beautiful things in life closer. If you face life with a “Mi” mentality, you will be surprised to find kindness around you.Even in difficult situations, it reminds us not to lose our hope for beauty, because if we hold beauty in our hearts, beauty will appear.

Hum:”Hum” is full of power that should not be underestimated. When you encounter obstacles in your practice and life, chant “Hum” loudly and a surge of courage to move forward will surge in your body.We are like travelers full of fighting spirit, relying on firm beliefs to strive to break through difficult obstacles.

The Six-Word Mantra carries the blessing of peace and smoothness in life. It can purify the six afflictions—greed, anger, ignorance, pride, jealousy, and stinginess—helping people let go of restless minds and face the people and events in life with calmness and serenity.
